Social media is often criticized for actually making us less social, however we think this new trend is a clapback to the haters. People are now sending text messages and greeting their “Number Neighbors,” (a person who has a phone number one digit off from your own). Though complete strangers, often times the number neighbors have corresponded to create a great conversation, which Twitter users have been sharing online.
The Original Number Neighbors Tweet
The Number Neighbors trend all started when Twitter user, @ryanlavallee, decided to share to his followers about the one time he texted his number neighbor. In the end Ryan invited the new contact to hang but the stranger declined. Not cool number neighbor, not cool!

Number Neighbors Become Trending
The response to Ryan’s original tweet was astounding. He earned over 13.2k retweets and 127.6 likes. Not only did the tweet receive love, but it also inspired others to text and communicate with their own number neighbors. The following consist of some of the very best responses.
Baked Surprises From Number Neighbors
This was probably one of the most hospitable of number neighbors, who offered a yummy looking potato casserole to welcome her to the neighborhood.

A Family Fail
The point of this trend was to “meet” someone that you don’t know to maybe brighten their day and make a new friend. However this was not the case with this family fail, in which the siblings find out they are number neighbors… At least they’ll never forget the other sibling’s number!

Confusing Concept?
Some people were not amused at all by the number neighbors shenanigans. Yet the most mind-boggling part is how some people didn’t understand the concept, even when it was flat out explained to them…

A Pawsitively Good Time
For most people, the few back and forth messages didn’t have much meaning. However, some people actually made friends with their number neighbor. In this heartwarming exchange, the user even got a new dog from the process. Talk about making (paw) pals for life!

A Presidential Surprise
Almost all of the number neighbors were random people. However, this lucky Twitter user was in for a true shock when he found out his number neighbor was none other than former President Barack Obama!

A Lesson In Love
While there were thousands of more messages to choose from, the ultimate takeaway came with this heartfelt exchange written by this number neighbor who shared his advice on love.
this is what i’m looking for from texting your number neighbor. meet a stranger, make a friend, learn something new & remind yourself that the people you interact with virtually and otherwise are people with valuable perspectives. sorry to y’all whose neighbor didn’t realize that https://t.co/zohLWgGvYB
