We Are “Wowing” At The Latest Meme Of Drake

3 August, 2019 by Taylor Swift

Drake and Chris Brown are two of the most successful hip hop artists, so when they produce a track together you know it’s going to be a bop. Their song collaboration “No Guidance” has already made its way to the Billboard Top 100, and fans were ecstatic for the release of the video, which came out Friday. However, it wasn’t the video itself that got all the attention, so much as this unimpressed frame of Drake during the “dance battle” scene.

Drake looking unimpressed, waving hands saying "ooo, wow."

A Throwback To Drake’s Degrassi Days

Although most people know him as the Grammy winning rapper, Drake first rose to stardom via his role on the Canadian hit series, Degrassi. However, we can’t help but think his acting skills have become a little rusty since his departure in 2009. However, his flat unimpressed face, waving raised hands, and the HILARIOUS “Ooo, wow”  he lets out really does a number for comically expressing how we feel in many life scenarios. So much, that it turned into a popular meme overnight…

The Unemployed Grad

Any recent graduate cane relate to this painfully accurate meme. The post-grad job hunt can seem like one of the most difficult processes in the world, and really makes you question the time and money put in to get that piece of paper…

What A Vision

As a glasses and lenses wearer since the ripe age of 7, I can fully admit how annoying it is when someone brags about their perfect vision. Wow, COOL man!

“Not Like The Other Guys”

Ah, the classic d-bag one liner. This is when all red flags go up, and lack of amusement is at an all time high. With so many guys claiming to be different, it’s no wonder Hot Girl Summer took off so quickly! (Men, take notes.)

A reporter covers the floods in neck-deep water

2 August, 2019 by Isabel Okhuijsen

Social media has acclaimed the efforts of the Pakistani journalist, Azadar Hussain, for reporting on floods in Punjab while standing in dangerously high waters. The reporter was trying to raise awareness on the rising level of the waters due to the intense rain that was falling in a province in Pakistan.

Monsoon season

Torrential rains had been heavily falling on the area for days. It has already caused at least 28 deaths, children included. Such rainfalls are pretty common during monsoon season in south Asia. That’s why Hussain decided to prove the importance of the floods.

He stood there, almost fully submerged in the water, and reported on what was going on. The video was posted by Pakistan’s GTV on Youtube under the caption of “Pakistani reporter in floodwater, risks his life in danger to perform his duties”.

The video has since created a massive uproar. People have been commenting all sorts of things. Many praised the man’s creativity and braveness, while others were concerned about his safety. Here are some examples.

We Are “Obsessed” With This Crying And Dancing TikTok

1 August, 2019 by Taylor Swift

There seems to be no end to the TikTok masterpieces that leave us in a state of both laughter and confusion. The most recent to hit the top of the charts and start a viral meme is a video by TikTok user @ReeseHardy_. In the video, the teen girl is crying, for reasons unknown, while performing a dance to the song “Obsessed” by Mariah Carey.

Behind The “Obsessed” Dance

While everyone (I repeat, EVERYONE) was left in a state of confusion as to why Reese is dancing while crying, we do have some answers to the dance itself. Turns out the dance wasn’t original, but rather part of the #obsessed dance challenge that was circling on TikTok at the time. One of the most ironic parts might be the fact many of the users who have participated in the challenge, weren’t old enough to even appreciate the song when it first released in 2009. We’re not complaining about the comeback though, this song was truly iconic.

The Crying Rise To Fame

Reese Hardy’s profile on TikTok was not famous before this video spread like wildfire. Since it’s publication on July 13th, the video has gained more than 1.6 million likes and thousands of comments. What made it grow even faster was the video’s share on the twitter account, “Cursed Tik Toks.” The tweet received over 134k likes and almost 30,000 retweets. More importantly, it started a meme caption contest for this hilarious yet uncomfortable video. The following are some of the best responses.

Struggling At The Club

We’ve all had at least one night out when we forced ourselves through the exhaustion to support our friends, yet would do just about anything to be back at home in the comfort of our beds.

Apology Unaccepted

Reese Hardy had zero intention of getting all the attention for this video. In fact, she apologized on her TikTok account for her crying and dancing display, saying “this started as a joke, i’m sorry guys.” Regardless, we’re glad she provided us the laughs this summer.

Spider-Man Explaining To Zendaya Meme

27 July, 2019 by Taylor Swift

After recently becoming the top grossing film in history, The Avengers: Endgame served as the impressive culmination to the 21 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that left big shoes to fill. With 10 Marvel films set to be released in the next two years as part of the 4th phase, fans are already keen about the development of many beloved characters, like Spider-Man. Fans were in for a treat when director Jon Watts shared this candid behind-the-scenes picture of Tom Holland and Zendaya.

Behind-the-scenes picture of spiderman and Zendaya.

Behind-The-Scenes Inspiration From Spider-Man

In the photo, we see Tom Holland dressed in his Spider-Man suit, leaning over as if explaining something to Zendaya. The actress’ face reads a mixture of distress and irritation. The photo has since been deleted from Watts’ Instagram story, but not before one Tumblr user peternedmj screenshot the image and shared to his account.

Spider-Man Explaining To Zendaya: A Meme Is Born

Soon after, Tom Holland himself shared a cropped version of the image on his Instagram. This sparked what would soon turn into the meme: “Spider-Man Explaining To Zendaya.” The creative combinations that people posted to Reddit are legendary, dealing with all sorts of topics needing to be explained. Here to share some of the very best of the bunch.

Tinder Regrets

Spider-man explaining to Zendaya meme focused on tinder.

We absolutely FEEL for Zendaya in this meme. Nothing is more agonizing and uncomfortable than feeling obligated to sit through a date with someone you really didn’t want to meet in the first place. Corny pick-up lines make this moment a hundred times more painful, we don’t care what you look like behind the mask, Spider-Man!

That Song Whose Lyrics You Forgot

Spider-man explaining to Zendaya meme.

How frustrating is it when you have a song stuck in your head, yet you literally remember zero of the lyrics? This meme perfectly represents how ridiculous we look (and how clueless our supposedly-all-knowing search engine is). With Shazam still inadequate for recognizing our miserable humming attempts, Google is our only hope. If you actually are able to find the song, serious congrats.

Storming Area 51

This version of the meme was keeping with the times, as people all around the world took to social media to talk about their summer plans to storm Area 51. Parents, you need not be concerned!

“Hot Girl Summer” Is The Unapologetic Meme We Needed

25 July, 2019 by Taylor Swift

With one of the worst heat waves in history due to global warming and a slew of political and social issues happening world wide, it’s reasonable to want summer 2019 to end ASAP. However, instead of getting down in the dumps about the heat, Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion came up with meme we NEEDED to get by this summer, “Hot Girl Summer.”

It’s a Hot girl summer ??‍♀️?

— HOT GIRL MEG (@theestallion) July 10, 2019

The Unapologetic Energy We Needed

While this seems like a pretty basic tweet, there’s a much deeper meaning that Megan shared with The Root. And yes, this catchphrase includes other genders too!

“It’s just basically about women — and men — just being unapologetically them, just having a good-a** time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody got to say about it.”

A Pop Culture Sensation

The theme of “Hot Girl Summer” took the pop culture world by storm. On Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, people have been posting their brightest and funkiest outfits, sharing their biggest accomplishments, snapping pics from their vacations or even from the comforts of their own homes. Some celebrities like Miley Cyrus have even joined in with this post of her dancing in her house, doing her thang shamelessly.

— Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) July 18, 2019

Even major brands got in on the fun with their own tweets referring to the self-uplifting catchphrase.

— Wendy’s (@Wendys) July 9, 2019

Others have been coining the phrase as a hilarious expectations versus reality meme. While all of us would love to look flawless and strut in confidence, the heat often just causes a sweaty result.

“Hot Girl Summer” Anthems

As a rapper, it only made sense that Megan decided her term was deserving of musical accompaniment. She created the “Hot Girl Summer” playlist on Spotify, which to date already has more than 124,000 followers. The playlist features songs by Megan Thee Stallion, along with other powerhouse hip hop and R&B artists, like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Future, and Cardi B. Additionally, Megan said she plans to release an anthem later this summer to make us all really feel the vibes.

A Trademark In The Works

“Hot Girl Summer” took off so quickly, with thousands of shares, likes, and hashtag posts, that Megan has actually decided to try and trademark the term. She filed on July 10 with the hopes of selling t-shirts, athletic apparel, and other merchandise with the term.

— billboard (@billboard) July 23, 2019

The best part about the phrase is that it focuses on living your best life and being comfortable in your own skin. So while negative things might be happening in our lives, it’s important to stand tall and be proud of ourselves this summer, no regrets!

The New “Cats” Trailer Is The Creepiest Thing We’ve Seen

20 July, 2019 by Taylor Swift

There was a lot of anticipation surrounding the new musical film production of “Cats” given big names like Taylor Swift, James Corden and Jason Derulo are part of the starring performers. However, the latest trailer released by Universal this week has instantly turned off many people from the possibility of going to see the movie when it releases in December. The reason? It’s downright creepy.

A Historic Success

The problem isn’t the storyline. In fact, “Cats” is based on a Tony-Award winning musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It was one of the longest running shows on Broadway at 18 years and its songs have been referenced in other films and productions, such as the famous audition scene in “School of Rock.”

Where The New “Cats” Went Wrong

With a killer cast and world-class dancers, the movie was set to be a hit. Until… the trailer came out. Instead of using the classic costumes worn in the Broadway version, the director Tom Hooper decided to try a CGI alternative. The result was creepy digital fur that made the human actors look like like were from another planet.

A Lack Of Pawsitivity On Twitter

People were quick to share their critical responses on Twitter, noting for example the absurd uncomfortable feeling we have seeing naked, yet not naked people-cats running around everywhere.

somehow the people in Cats look more nude than if they were actually nude, and it's weird as hell. pic.twitter.com/vw8vtsIAUa

— Gavia Baker-Whitelaw (@Hello_Tailor) July 18, 2019

Sexist Depictions Of The Cats?

Some criticized that this “nude” version that mimicked the bodies of their human actors actually made them look overtly sexual. Part of this is due to the nature of the musical itself. It does have sexual themes (you can infer, we ARE talking cats here). And yet, Hooper’s version goes one step further. And viewers couldn’t help but notice that this was primarily seen only in the female cats…

"Why do the man cats wear clothes but the lady cats don't?" she thought, several hours after the cauldron of cat-madness had boiled away all strength to resist pic.twitter.com/hOxGGWffR1

— Sady Doyle (@sadydoyle) July 19, 2019

Size Matters

Others were more upset at the logistical aspects of the film, such as the miniature size of the “cats.”

I OWN A VERY SMALL CAT SHE DOES NOT LOOK THIS TINY ON MY BED pic.twitter.com/0vipSd5vm9

— Emily “kind of a speed freak” Heller (@emilypheller) 18 de julio de 2019

Musical Or Horror Film?

The best take might be from Ian Abramson, who paired the “Us”  music to the “Cats” trailer. Jordan Peele even retweeted the creation in agreement, as it truly evokes the uneasiness we all were feeling.

Yes. https://t.co/xyittLIaA9

— Jordan Peele (@JordanPeele) July 19, 2019

The movie doesn’t release until December, so only time will tell if this musical film will end up being a box office hit or a serious fur pas.
