“Hot Girl Summer” Is The Unapologetic Meme We Needed

25 July, 2019 by Taylor Swift

With one of the worst heat waves in history due to global warming and a slew of political and social issues happening world wide, it’s reasonable to want summer 2019 to end ASAP. However, instead of getting down in the dumps about the heat, Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion came up with meme we NEEDED to get by this summer, “Hot Girl Summer.”

It’s a Hot girl summer ??‍♀️?

— HOT GIRL MEG (@theestallion) July 10, 2019

The Unapologetic Energy We Needed

While this seems like a pretty basic tweet, there’s a much deeper meaning that Megan shared with The Root. And yes, this catchphrase includes other genders too!

“It’s just basically about women — and men — just being unapologetically them, just having a good-a** time, hyping up your friends, doing you, not giving a damn about what nobody got to say about it.”

A Pop Culture Sensation

The theme of “Hot Girl Summer” took the pop culture world by storm. On Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat, people have been posting their brightest and funkiest outfits, sharing their biggest accomplishments, snapping pics from their vacations or even from the comforts of their own homes. Some celebrities like Miley Cyrus have even joined in with this post of her dancing in her house, doing her thang shamelessly.

Even major brands got in on the fun with their own tweets referring to the self-uplifting catchphrase.

Others have been coining the phrase as a hilarious expectations versus reality meme. While all of us would love to look flawless and strut in confidence, the heat often just causes a sweaty result.

“Hot Girl Summer” Anthems

As a rapper, it only made sense that Megan decided her term was deserving of musical accompaniment. She created the “Hot Girl Summer” playlist on Spotify, which to date already has more than 124,000 followers. The playlist features songs by Megan Thee Stallion, along with other powerhouse hip hop and R&B artists, like Rihanna, Beyoncé, Future, and Cardi B. Additionally, Megan said she plans to release an anthem later this summer to make us all really feel the vibes.

A Trademark In The Works

“Hot Girl Summer” took off so quickly, with thousands of shares, likes, and hashtag posts, that Megan has actually decided to try and trademark the term. She filed on July 10 with the hopes of selling t-shirts, athletic apparel, and other merchandise with the term.

The best part about the phrase is that it focuses on living your best life and being comfortable in your own skin. So while negative things might be happening in our lives, it’s important to stand tall and be proud of ourselves this summer, no regrets!

Giant Paper Airplane Made Of Falafel Wrappers Takes Flight

23 July, 2019 by Taylor Swift

Remember when you were younger and your parents told you not to play with your food? Nevertheless, this rule didn’t apply for the paper airplane competition held at the Los Angeles based company, Wondros. The company’s founder Jesse Dylan told employees they had a competition for who could make the best paper airplane out of recycled lunch wrappers from their “Falafel Fridays.”

folded paper airplane flying in the sky.

An All Out Airplane Creation

For anyone who has made airplanes in elementary school during recess, you know how difficult it can be to make just the perfect design for a nice “liftoff.” Given the material used, you’d think a small plane would be the standard creation. However, two employees in the editorial department decided to go all out, and were the winners of the competition with this massive design.

A Whole Lot Of Falafel

Looking at the design, it’s pretty incredible how the duo was able to construct an almost perfect replication of a commercial style airplane. When you compare the size of the plane to the people sending it off and catching it for landing, we can’t help but wonder… how much falafel was eaten in the process?

A plate full of falafel.

An Innovative Use Of Trash

Despite the laughable amount of falafel needed to have created this design, we do have to commend the company for their creative take on recycling the paper. With global warming being an increasing ongoing threat, it’s important to think of innovative ways to put our waste to use. This paper airplane is a fun, prime example.

a dumpster full of trash.

Competition In The Paper Airplane World

Despite being an extremely impressive paper aircraft, the largest paper airplane to date isn’t this Falafel-fueled creation, but an 800 pound (363 kg), 45 foot plane created by Arturo Valdenegro of Tucson. This design also happened to be a part of a contest. Engineers helped to create the final product for launch over the Arizona desert in 2012. Good thing they chose a dry climate– we can’t even begin to imagine how devastating that drenched disaster would be in the rain.

Although the Wondros design was nowhere close to that grand a scale, we have to give credit to the fact editors created this aircraft. Maybe it’s time for a career change!

The New “Cats” Trailer Is The Creepiest Thing We’ve Seen

20 July, 2019 by Taylor Swift

There was a lot of anticipation surrounding the new musical film production of “Cats” given big names like Taylor Swift, James Corden and Jason Derulo are part of the starring performers. However, the latest trailer released by Universal this week has instantly turned off many people from the possibility of going to see the movie when it releases in December. The reason? It’s downright creepy.

A Historic Success

The problem isn’t the storyline. In fact, “Cats” is based on a Tony-Award winning musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It was one of the longest running shows on Broadway at 18 years and its songs have been referenced in other films and productions, such as the famous audition scene in “School of Rock.”

Where The New “Cats” Went Wrong

With a killer cast and world-class dancers, the movie was set to be a hit. Until… the trailer came out. Instead of using the classic costumes worn in the Broadway version, the director Tom Hooper decided to try a CGI alternative. The result was creepy digital fur that made the human actors look like like were from another planet.

A Lack Of Pawsitivity On Twitter

People were quick to share their critical responses on Twitter, noting for example the absurd uncomfortable feeling we have seeing naked, yet not naked people-cats running around everywhere.

somehow the people in Cats look more nude than if they were actually nude, and it's weird as hell. pic.twitter.com/vw8vtsIAUa

— Gavia Baker-Whitelaw (@Hello_Tailor) July 18, 2019

Sexist Depictions Of The Cats?

Some criticized that this “nude” version that mimicked the bodies of their human actors actually made them look overtly sexual. Part of this is due to the nature of the musical itself. It does have sexual themes (you can infer, we ARE talking cats here). And yet, Hooper’s version goes one step further. And viewers couldn’t help but notice that this was primarily seen only in the female cats…

"Why do the man cats wear clothes but the lady cats don't?" she thought, several hours after the cauldron of cat-madness had boiled away all strength to resist pic.twitter.com/hOxGGWffR1

— Sady Doyle (@sadydoyle) July 19, 2019

Size Matters

Others were more upset at the logistical aspects of the film, such as the miniature size of the “cats.”

— Emily “kind of a speed freak” Heller (@emilypheller) 18 de julio de 2019

Musical Or Horror Film?

The best take might be from Ian Abramson, who paired the “Us”  music to the “Cats” trailer. Jordan Peele even retweeted the creation in agreement, as it truly evokes the uneasiness we all were feeling.

Yes. https://t.co/xyittLIaA9

— Jordan Peele (@JordanPeele) July 19, 2019

The movie doesn’t release until December, so only time will tell if this musical film will end up being a box office hit or a serious fur pas.

FaceApp Creates Creepily Accurate Faces From The Future

18 July, 2019 by Taylor Swift

Getting old is inevitable, but many of us the past few days were shocked by some of the photos in our feeds of friends and family that seemed to have aged overnight. Rest assured, these old and wrinkly photos were not the result of some disease, but rather the FaceApp, an application that has filters to change the appearance of your face.

An Overnight Sensation

The most popular filter on the FaceApp, which has given rise to the #FaceAppChallenge, is the old filter. Take or upload a photo of yourself, and you can see the same image, but aged 20 years or more in the future. The hashtag has gotten over 100,000 posts on Instagram alone. Considering the amount of undereye bags and wrinkles some of us unfortunately had from the filter, we truly hope it is more than 20 years!

Should We Be Worried About FaceApp?

As with any viral app that involves using personal pictures and data, the FaceApp has come under recent criticism and controversy as well. On Monday, software developer Joshua Nozzi tweeted his concerns, stating “BE CAREFUL WITH FACEAPP – the face aging fad app. It immediately uploads your photos without asking, whether you chose one or not.”

However, Nozzi has since retracted his statement after the developers responded with a justifiable statement. They said FaceApp only uploads the photos that are selected to be used for editing. Given it’s a photo editing app, this seems perfectly reasonable and necessary.

Additionally, some users were worried about their data being transferred to Russia, where there were data privacy scandals recently connected to Facebook and Cambridge Analytica. However, FaceApp creators said the “user data is not transferred to Russia.”

Now you can sleep easy knowing your photos and data are safe, so that the stress and worry don’t make you actually age overnight! Or better yet, maybe it’s time to start investing in some good facial anti-aging cream?

Walk A Mile In These Make-Shift Louboutins

13 July, 2019 by Taylor Swift

TikTok has recently become the best source of viral content, with many users bringing back songs to create some of the most crazy, hilarious challenges. The most recent to become popular on the app is to the tune of “Work” by Iggy Azalea, a hit song that was released back in 2014. The challenge? Wear your own version of “Louboutins” to the intro of the song.

Louboutin Inspiration

As witnessed in the above TikTok version, people have been making their own versions of Louboutins at home, such as these lovely pair of plastic oven mitts. The movements and steps mimic that of Iggy Azalea in the actual video, where she slowly saunters down a dessert road in her own pair of Louboutins. However, the majority of us don’t have the dough to put down hundreds of dollars on a pair of heels so… homemade versions will have to do.

Creativity At Its Finest

We have to admit, the creativity that was put into some of these videos is undeniable. One of the best ones might be this version, in which a guy taped carrots to his heels. The video has gotten over 1.4 million views to date. To be honest, in the distance shows it does truly look like they could be stilettos. Considering some of the crazy stuff we’ve seen on the runway, we wouldn’t be surprised if a modified version was in some designer’s upcoming fall collection.

The Lengths People Will Go…

While perusing the many videos that people made for the challenge, it does make you wonder the lengths people go to participate in a challenge. This group of friends all had to scavenge their houses for the most random of items for this parade of home-made Louboutins. Truly quite a collection!

Iggy Azalea’s Response

At first, the Australian star was not a big fan of the Louboutins challenge, but it grew on her. She even retweeted some of her favorites from her twitter page. Regardless, it is great press for Iggy Azalea, whose new album “In My Defense” is set to release this week. Who knows what new fashion inspiration this album will provide us!

A Spot On Parody of “Guys With ‘Entrepreneur’ In Their Bio”

11 July, 2019 by Taylor Swift

With digital networking on the rise, it’s now more important than ever to have a profile that both captures people’s attention and sells your best talents. However, some key phrases in certain bios have a way of screaming “scam,” such as with the title entrepreneur. While many true entrepreneurs have incredible success stories, such as Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey, there is a fine line between an intrepid self-starter and a shameless failure-to-launch.

The latter is typically a former frat guy who still lives for the party scene as means of “networking.” Comedian Trevor Wallace perfectly and depicts this stereotype in his latest video, “Guys with ‘Entrepreneur’ in their bio.”

A Popular All-To-Accurate Parody

Since its release on July 9th, the video has gotten over 1 million views thanks to its hilarious portrayal of the still-shamelessly-lives-at-home-with-his-parents fake entrepreneur with no real job prospects in sight. The shortened tweet version also got thousands of likes, retweets, replies with people swearing by the video’s accuracy.

stop this is too good !!!! every guy in my town who thought they outsmarted the system with “the secret” ?

— ease up kid! (@fulloflilacs) July 11, 2019

You Don’t Need To Be Able To Spell To Be An Entrepreneur

One of the funniest themes that continually pops up in the video is the inability to spell his own career of entrepreneur. But that’s okay, because he can at least spell the name of his car, TESLA. Wait, just kidding, he can’t. Thank goodness for Siri!

Sign of TESLA car.

Influencers… The Latest Entrepreneur?

So spelling might not be this type of entrepreneurs’ strong point, but at least they are great at getting investors. Family investors, that is. The cycle of wealthy individuals having their parents support them to success is nothing new. It just sometimes takes new forms, as seen in this video when he goes “live” as if he were an influencer on Instagram. In reality, his words lacked any sense or true meaning. However, it does get us thinking about the thousands of people who claim to be influencers on Instagram. Could one consider this as the latest version of ‘entrepreneur’ in one’s bio?
